If you have little or no experience in using metal detectors to search for lost valuables the purchase of a used metal detector may be a good option for you. Used brand name metal detectors are substantially less costly than newer ones and can provide you with equal detection quality. Here are some helpful tips when purchasing and using your used metal detector.

1. The first thing you need consider is the type of metal detector you will be using. This will be dependent on what type of treasures you are interested in detecting. Metal detectors are produced for different treasure hunting applications. For example, if you are interested in relic hunting you will want to purchase a used metal detector that has the capability of detecting relics and if you are interested in locating buried coins and jewelry then you will want a detector that is able to that.

2. Before actually buying your used metal detector you should test it to make sure the equipment is properly functioning. All metal detectors have sensing and signaling capabilities, along with a meter that can assist you in zeroing in on your target. You’ll want to make sure that all sensors and alerting devices properly function.

3. Whenever using your used metal detector use it in a methodical way.  There are many different patterns you can use. The pattern you use is not as important as the knowledge of knowing what areas you have already covered.  Once your used metal detector beeps move it around the area from where the beep came. Move it from side to side and front to back. As you move it around the area take note of your indicator. The indicator will help you zero in on your target, showing exactly where the treasure is at.
After you have located your target use a small trowel to dig it out of the ground, but be sure to replace any grass your soil that comes with it.
