It is no secret that people are looking for more and different ways of exercising and getting outside. With the economy bad and home prices still low, investing in a gym membership is tough. Yet, many people find just walking a bit of a bore. Well, with a metal detector, you can tramp around your neighborhood, the beach, or out into the hills and valleys, and actually find something of interest. No matter where you live, there could be colonial tools and dishes, old coins, or even lost gold treasures buried in your vicinity. So, a metal detector can get your out for some good walking and digging, and give you the potential for discovery and profit.

When using a Minelab metal detector, the first real tip has to do with putting it together.

1. Be sure to read the manual first. A lot of problems with the detectors can be traced back to people not assembling the unit properly. So, read the directions, review them, and then follow them exactly.

Your next tip has to do with noise.
2. You want to get rid of the routine background noises of nature; this will make the signal you get as you detect things clearer and easier to hear. So, go outside and find a nice clear area where you do not get any signals for any objects. This process is known as a “noise cancel”, and it will make detecting things later a whole lot easier.

Once you start searching, and get a hit, this is where the final tip comes into play.

3. After you get the hit, swing the detector both ways (back and forth) over the area. Next, step away, press the pinpoint button, and come back toward the target area. Now, here’s a little extra tip – on this second series of swings, to them at ninety degrees from the direction you swung the detector the first time. This will help you to get a good lock on the exact position. Then, get your shovel and start digging!

If you have a love of history, yet do not want to just sit around reading books or watching documentaries, then a metal detector might be the way to go for you. That might sound like an odd thing to suggest; most people see a metal detector as something to look for coins or a lost watch on the beach. Yet, there are other things you can look for. Depending on where you live in the country, you might find colonial tools or dishes; or maybe you will find a cowboy’s bullets or spurs, or – if you live near a civil war battle site, you might find buttons or coins from a soldier who perished in battle. For some people, making such a discovery is quite the “rush” of excitement! They are uncovering a bit of history. Along with that, there is always the possibility of finding something unique and valuable.

Now, when using a Tesoro metal detector, there are a few things you can do to improve your chances of getting good signals.

1. If you want to search for anything metal, put the detector on “all metal mode” and set the threshold level as low as you can possibly hear it. You want to be able to just barely hear it. That way, you will be able to hear any minute change to the sound. If the item you detect is very small or very deep, the signal could be incredibly faint.

2. If you’re using “discriminate mode”, then boost the threshold level, and this will help with you “target volume”.

3. Finally, if you are searching with no threshold tone at all; this is known as “silent search”, then set the threshold volume at the maximum you can stand. That’ll help you detect any items that are buried very deep.

Make use of these tips, and your hunting will be all the better; enjoy!

If you have little or no experience in using metal detectors to search for lost valuables the purchase of a used metal detector may be a good option for you. Used brand name metal detectors are substantially less costly than newer ones and can provide you with equal detection quality. Here are some helpful tips when purchasing and using your used metal detector.

1. The first thing you need consider is the type of metal detector you will be using. This will be dependent on what type of treasures you are interested in detecting. Metal detectors are produced for different treasure hunting applications. For example, if you are interested in relic hunting you will want to purchase a used metal detector that has the capability of detecting relics and if you are interested in locating buried coins and jewelry then you will want a detector that is able to that.

2. Before actually buying your used metal detector you should test it to make sure the equipment is properly functioning. All metal detectors have sensing and signaling capabilities, along with a meter that can assist you in zeroing in on your target. You’ll want to make sure that all sensors and alerting devices properly function.

3. Whenever using your used metal detector use it in a methodical way. There are many different patterns you can use. The pattern you use is not as important as the knowledge of knowing what areas you have already covered. Once your used metal detector beeps move it around the area from where the beep came. Move it from side to side and front to back. As you move it around the area take note of your indicator. The indicator will help you zero in on your target, showing exactly where the treasure is at.
After you have located your target use a small trowel to dig it out of the ground, but be sure to replace any grass your soil that comes with it.

These days, with so much uncertainty in the world, the term “metal detector” has generally taken on a totally different connotation from what we are used to thinking of. Now it is airport security, and taking your keys and coins out of your pocket to get inside a courthouse or other official building. Well, there is another type of metal detector, the one that people use to go treasure hunting; and White’s is an outstanding type of just such a detector.

The thing is, there are so many metal objects out there to confound you as you search for something of value. How do you know that the object you have just locked onto is a ring and not just the pull tab from a soda can? You do not want to waste time digging only to be rewarded with trash. Well, there are a few of things you can do to improve your chances of reaping a fine reward.

Try to avoid fiddling the frequency setting; just leave it at the preset. You may be tempted to try different levels, but the preset is really the best – trust the manufacturer on this point.
There is the discrimination setting. For this, put it about two clicks below the ring range.
Finally, set the sensitivity at its maximum level; that will help you to find anything that is out there. Now, if you find yourself getting a lot of false signals, then you will want to ease back on the sensitivity setting. Just watch the display and listen. The listening is more important; the clicks will ease off before the display clears, so use it as your main guide. Once the false signals are gone, stop lowering the sensitivity and you are good to go.

With your metal detector set up this way, you can easily tell the difference between a nickel and a pull tab. Swinging the detector over the item and getting an image that jumps all over the display is a sure sign of worthless junk. Happy hunting!

People love the idea of getting out in the fresh air and sunshine; and if you can also explore for relics and artifacts, and maybe find something of value while you do it – all the better. With that in mind, many people use metal detectors to hunt for coins, rings, and all manner of artifacts. When you are using a Bounty Hunter model metal detector, there are some tips to follow to make your searching all the better.

1. A model like their Quick Draw II has an advanced computer circuit that gives you a real boost in your search process. It can help you tell the difference between something that is nothing more than recent trash, and something of historic importance. You do not want to spend an hour digging for what you think is a lost treasure, only to find an old soda bottle cap!

2. There are stereo headphones. They give you great stereo sound, and you can control the volume for each ear. This can come in real handy when you are trying to tell the delicate difference between sounds coming from each type of object. When you want to block out all unnecessary background noise, well-padded headphones are the key to giving you good sound.

3. Get yourself one of the padded nylon carrying bags. Remember, your metal detector is both valuable, and a delicate instrument. So, protect your investment! Bounty Hunter makes a full line of rugged, double-stitched bags; and each is custom made to hold the model they are designed for. In addition, the bags have pockets for you to store extra batteries, or any other accessories you have for your detector. Those extra batteries can be real important when you’re out in the field; you don’t want to have to be running home if your detector dies on you. So, a good carrying bag can be vital.
