The disorder known as acid reflux is avoidable disease. Heartburn occurs when the stomach produces more acid than it can control and this acid eventually makes it's way up the esophagus and into the throat. Sometimes the condition can be medical related. Most of the time, however, this reflux of acid is caused by something that you have done or something that you have a habit of doing. Smoking is a major acid reflux cause. Smoking can cause acid reflux in several ways. Smoking damages your mucous membranes. Your throat muscles' reflexes can also be damaged when you smoke. When you smoke, your stomach automatically produces extra acid. You also tend to produce less saliva. One thing saliva does is help to reduce the problems caused by any acid that rises into your mouth or throat. Of course, there's a simple solution to this acid reflux cause. If you stop smoking, your problem will be solved. For many people, alas, this is extremely difficult. Remember, though, that if you quit smoking, there are many benefits aside from getting over acid reflux. This can cure or prevent many other health problems, some even more serious than acid reflux!
